All three major averages posted gains for the third consecutive week, lifted by solid quarterly earnings and positive economic data. Earnings season ramps up next week, with five of the Super Six mega-cap stocks delivering results. Employment numbers are the most important economic data, with Friday's January nonfarm payrolls report carrying the most weight. The January ISM Manufacturing report on Thursday and December's factory orders report Friday are expected to show the sector still in contraction mode. But earnings and commentary this week from peer Sartorious made us encouraged about a return to growth in 2024.

A UBS logo is seen next to Credit Suisse at the Bahnhofstrasse before a news conference of Swiss bank UBS in Zurich Switzerland, August 30, 2023. The court, which also upheld the guilty verdict against the bank, said a new trial would need to take place at the Paris appeals court to determine a new fine, if any. UBS's shares, which were already up on the day, spiked as much as 3% more after news broke that the 1.8 billion-euro fine was struck down. The decision by the Cour de Cassation, France's highest judicial court, means the guilty verdict on UBS is final. France's top court reviewed whether the Paris appeals court ruling had complied with the law, not the facts that underpinned its decision.

Meanwhile over at Miu Miu, it was a heartfelt adieu to Fabio Zambernardi after more than four decades with the Prada Group; as in Milan, Miuccia Prada came out and took a bow with him one last time. Pamela Anderson attended fashion week shows sans makeup, as shown here at Vivienne Westwood. At Miu Miu, Sydney Sweeney, Emma Chamberlain, Zaya Wade and Mia Goth made for an eclectic, très-trendy front row; Cate Blanchett appeared at Louis Vuitton alongside Zendaya, who wore a dramatic white double-zipper dress that has gone viral. Issey Miyake continues to explore movement in its runway shows, this season with musicians imitating chirping and other sounds found in nature. Fast, cheap and deadly How fentanyl replaced heroin and hooked AmericaLeer en EspañolReuters obtained and analyzed ten year’s worth of data on drugs seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents at ports of entry along the southern border. It shows: Fentanyl seizures by weight more than tripled in the last quarter of 2022 compared to a year earlier. Pills were mentioned in nearly half of fentanyl border seizure incidents in 2022, up from just 6% five years earlier. A fifth of fentanyl seizures take place on pedestrians, the Reuters analysis shows. Over the same period, heroin seizures fell more than 80% from over 2,000 kg, according to the Reuters analysis.

Yet “Welfare,” which shared the opening honors in Avignon with a dance production, Bintou Dembélé’s “G.R.O.O.V.E.,” looks as absurd onstage as it is affecting on-screen. It’s as if the sitcom “That 70s Show” had opted to tackle welfare benefits, complete with well-cut, visibly new costumes. The stories told in Wiseman’s film are loosely reorganized here into a day in the life of a welfare center, as case workers deal with one exasperated claimant after the next. There are comedic moments in the film, but in Deliquet’s stage version, they start to feel involuntarily farcical. The energetic delivery of the cast may be because they need to project in the cavernous space, which holds around 2,000 spectators.

PARIS, June 23 (Reuters) - French sports minister Amelie Oudea Castera says she is not too concerned by the investigations into alleged corruption surrounding the Paris 2024 Olympics, which took a new turn as two top officials were targeted by police searches on Friday. A source with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters that Paris 2024 director general Etienne Thobois and executive director of Games operations Edouard Donnelly were subject to searches. The source would not specify whether it was their homes that had been searched. On Tuesday, the headquarters of the Paris 2024 Olympics organising committee and those of its infrastructure partner were searched by police as part of investigations into alleged embezzlement of public funds and favouritism, prosecutors said. The national financial prosecutor's office (PNF) said the Paris 2024 headquarters were raided amid a preliminary investigation launched in 2017 into contracts made by the Summer Games' organising committee.

PARIS, March 9 (Reuters) - France's long-term budget planning is once again at risk of getting blown off course by overly optimistic forecasts, with high interest rates adding new pressure, the national audit office said on Friday. The independent public audit body has made similar criticisms before, but it said this time public finances would come under additional pressure if the government's borrowing costs remained above currently planned levels. The government's long-term budget planning does not foresee France's 10-year benchmark bond yield above 3% before 2027, when its current long-term budget planning ends. The audit office said if the borrowing rate remained one percentage point above the government's expectations between now and 2027 that would add 17 billion euros ($18 billion) to debt servicing costs by then. In turn, that would push the public debt burden from an expected 111.2% of economic output this year to 113% by 2027, the audit office calculated.
U.S.-based GSV invests only in edtech startups around the world and manages about $500 million in assets. These are very early days for the Indian edtech market," Deborah Quazzo, managing partner at GSV, told Reuters on the sidelines of the Emeritus-GSV Leaders Summit in New Delhi on Monday. Edtech startups in India have laid off thousands of employees in the past year and have been unable to raise funding as a slowdown gripped the market. Indian edtech startups raised $2.6 billion in 2022, down 36% compared to the previous year, according to data provider Tracxn Technologies. The Indian government is also "pretty constructive" on education policies, a key factor that encourages investors like GSV to invest, she said.
SYDNEY, Dec 15 (Reuters) - Australia's corporate regulator sued the country's biggest comparison website on Thursday in relation to a cryptocurrency product, accusing it of conducting unlicensed financial services and breaching consumer protection laws. ASIC Chairman Joe Longo said in parliament this month that the regulator wants to test in court whether crypto assets count as financial products under the law. As of September, Finder Wallet owed A$20.8 million ($14.2 million) to consumers in the absence of legal protections, the cour filing added. A Finder.com spokesperson told Reuters the company did "not share ASIC's view that Finder Earn can be regarded as a debenture" and said all customer money was returned when the product was closed in November. “THEY’RE VERY NICE, inspiring weirdos.” That’s how Louis Vuitton women’s artistic director Nicolas Ghesquière describes his fashion-industry peers. Growing up in France’s relatively remote Loire Valley, Mr. Ghesquière, 51, dreamed of being one such weirdo. He’d watch fashion programs on TV, special-order magazines with his mother and customize friends’ clothes. “As a kid [fashion] was my way of expressing myself,” recalled the Paris-based designer. Since 2013, he’s been at Vuitton, whose new spring 2023 collection was shown in Paris earlier this month at the Louvre Museum’s Cour Carrée.
